They are unstable. When the wind stops blowing or the sun goes down, the lights will go out. To prevent this, utility companies must keep old, inefficient fossil fuel plants running in the background as "backups."

This means they have to build and maintain two separate energy systems. It is incredibly expensive and inefficient. But remember the "Cost-Plus" rule! For utility companies and their bureaucratic friends, "expensive and inefficient" is not a problem. It is a feature. It is a gold mine.
